Warning the scripture readings this sermon is reflecting on are not light and fluffy. There's some tough standards coming from Jesus here... although, in a world where the likes of Greta Thunberg have told us the adults have failed the youth, and people keep finding loop holes in laws to avoid paying taxes... perhaps really high standards are refreshing.
Sermon based on texts for Sixth Sunday after Epiphany (Feb. 16, 2020). (Gospel) Matthew 5:21-37; (First Reading) Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Psalm 119:1-8; (Second Reading) 1 Corinthians 3:1-9. So often when we come to church we are there to hear about why we should have faith in God... in this Sunday's scripture reading Jesus is telling us why God has faith in us. Part of this teaching is some strong encouragement.
This sermon is based on the lectionary texts - (Gospel) Matthew 5:13-20; (First Reading) Isaiah 58:1-9a; Psalm 112:1-9 [10]; (Second Reading) 1 Corinthians 2:1-12 Jesus called the disciples by saying 'I'll make you fish for people' but first they need to learn where to find the people... to do this they need to learn to see different... they'll need to see what Jesus sees. Someone else that has been teaching others to see different is Arielle Kayabaga, councillor for Ward 13 in London, ON. Recently she argued to keep many new services in libraries so that the poor and marginalized can access them. For doing this, she was nearly kicked out of the city's budget meeting. It didn't stop her from trying to get everyone to see things differently. This sermon is based on the texts for the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany (Feb. 2, 2020). (Gospel) Matthew 5:1-12; (First Reading) Micah 6:1-8; Psalm 15; (Second Reading) 1 Corinthians 1:18-31.
