Easter in an Isolated Culture

Are Smart Phones making us into an isolated group of people much like the disciples all scared and locked away in their house after the crucifixion of Jesus?  The disicples are given the Spirit, but it's no simple answer... the Spirit doesn't just naturally fix their fears.  How might the gift of the Spirit help our culture that grows more and more separated dispite being so technologically connected?  (Sermon based on lectionary readings: (Gospel) John 20:19-31; (First Reading) Acts 5:27-32)

Easter Sunday - Don't Objectify God

4/23/2019

Canadian comedian Mary Walsh said recently, You big payoff that comes with aging is that there is great happiness from no longer worrying about being the object of someone's desire and living into being the subject of your own life. (said at Canadian Screen Actors Awards).  Richard Rohr might say that this way of thinking is also a good practice to become closer to God who refuses to be objectified.  This Easter we celebrate a God who came to be subject among us and rises to continue living this way among us and asking us to live this way with him forever more.  (Sermon based on scripture form Luke 24: 1-12)

Get it Together - Palm Sunday

Jesus wants the disciples to be risky and shoplift for him.  It's not so much what he wanted shoplifted...it's the state of the thing that about to be shoplifted... a never be ridden, tied up donkey.  There's nothing more important Jesus than to untie the potential of those in his presence... What's tying you up?  What untapped potential are you in the mood to explore... Christ can release you too!
Sermon based on readings for Palm Sunday (April 14, 2019): Luke 19:28-40; Psalm 31:9-16

Something for Christ, Something from Christ - Lent 5

Mary washes Jesus feet... for a guy who walks everywhere, it must feel soooo good.  When there's someone in our lives who does so much for us, it's easy to take it for granted and do nothing in return, but sometimes it's something simple... something you know... and sometimes that gift can be used to further God's Kingdom here on earth with a new Heaven and new Earth.
Sermon based on readings from John 12:1-8; Isaiah 43:16-21.

The Prodigal Son and Father - Wasteful and Extravagant - Lent 4

4/2/2019

This Sunday's sermon was on the Prodigal Son - Like you, I've heard this story more than a couple of times... but I'm embarrassed to say, I don't even know what the word 'prodigal' means... so I looked it up... and reflecting upon it's meaning is a lovely thing to do... please join me in doing so. (Gospel - Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32)
