Welcome Edgar Suski: Chalmers United Church has new leadership leading the choir and music. Edgar Suski completed his Bachelor of Music and Masters degrees in piano performance at Western University. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in composition at Western University. Edgar has enjoyed participating in music workshops in Canada and abroad, and holds a diploma from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, Poland. While a student, he has frequently been asked to play in masterclasses, most notably for Dang Thai Son, laureate of the first prize in the Xth International Chopin Competition. In the winter of 2011 Edgar won the opportunity to perform Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G with the UWO Symphony Orchestra. Edgar is excited to begin his tenure as Music Director, and believes he will learn a lot from his experiences with the wonderful community at Chalmer’s United Church.
Here is Joe's Celebration of Life service with his brothers, Dan and D'Arcy reading scripture and his sisters Barb and Judy giving his Eulogy. Edgar Suski playing piano. Dec 14, 2019. You are missed by all Joe. God bless you!
On June 23rd, 2019, Chalmers United Church held a service celebrating the life of Gary Stevens. Please pray for his family in this trying time. On this recording, you will hear lovely tributes from his wife Paula, his children, grandchildren and siblings. God bless you Gary!
Here is Jean Sims' service for those who were unable to attend in person. Special thanks to Jean's grandchildren Evette, David, and Tambra for sharing stories of their grandmothers, and to Rev. Richard Hryniw (a long time neighbour of Jean and Allen's) for preaching, and to Barb Irvine for providing music, and Rev. Doug Peck leading opening prayers. Please continue to pray for Jean and her family.
100 Years of Remembering - Bagpipers Around the Common Wealth were encouraged to go to Cenotaph's and War Memorials everywhere and help mark 100 Years of Remembering at 6am, by playing Battles O'er followed by Amazing Grace. Kintore was very blessed to have our very own Les Brunton lead us in this celebration. Thank you Les!

REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP
April 5, 2016
Tidings of Great Joy!
The Oxford Presbytery Sponsorship Committee is pleased to announce that we are sponsoring a Syrian family of five.
The husband (35) and the wife (33) understand a bit of English but Arabic is their spoken language. The husband has experience in painting and carpentry.
There are three daughters - ages ten, eight and 5 months. The older girls were learning English.
The Ingersoll house at 141 King Solomon Street is still available and we will be moving the furniture in shortly. If you have household items to donate, please contact the “Stocking Committee” - Peggy Miller 519. 290.1203, Linda Holdsworth 519.539.1749, Virginia Andrews 519.537.7960
We will continue our shared fund raising efforts throughout Oxford Presbytery. Please make donations through your local church. Your church treasurer will then send a lump sum Refugee Sponsorship to donation to St. David’s.
The St. David’s United Church treasurer reports that as of Sunday April 3, 2016, $40,824.50 has been donated to Oxford Presbytery Refugee Sponsorship.
The Refugee Committee will now be working in high gear as we make preparations for the arrival of the family. We have to complete the paperwork and have not been told the expected arrival date. It should be approximately 4 - 6 weeks after the paperwork has been approved.
Once the family arrives, we hope that the congregations of Oxford Presbytery will continue in their support as the family adjusts to their new life in Canada.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Gregory, (St. David’s United Church)

This Lent, join the many biblical characters who wrestle with a longing for home, like the psalmist who asks, “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?” In Longing for Home, diverse United Church contributors reflect on scripture related to the theme of displacement or uprootedness. They examine topics including poverty, ecology, food sovereignty, migration, the occupied Palestinian territories, and right relations between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.

On Fossil Fuels and Living into Decisions
Read news from our Moderator: On Fossil Fuels and Living into Decisions
12 January 2016
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
The United Church’s New Creed affirms our commitment to live with respect in creation. How we do that is not always clear. However, we have different approaches to how we live out these shared values. In our diversity, it is inevitable that our church will make choices that some of us find hard to accept.
This summer the General Council voted to sell our investment holdings in the 200 largest fossil fuel companies. We made this decision out of our deep desire to “participate in God’s work of healing and mending creation.” Many in our church celebrate this decision, seeing it as one way that we can live out our commitment to climate justice.
At the same time, for those faithful United Church members whose work is connected to the fossil fuel industry, this decision has been a source of pain. At a time when many are experiencing layoffs and employment uncertainty due to low oil prices, this action may have felt like their own church kicking them when they are down. Some of our brothers and sisters have also felt judged by the tone of the discussion surrounding this decision.
The United Church of Canada stands with them in this time of economic uncertainty. As another proposal at the General Council meeting noted, while the church is encouraging investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency, we also want a “just transition for workers and communities” affected by the shift away from oil.
And of course the issues go well beyond the fossil fuel companies and their employees. Each of us wrestles with the complexity of living in a social and economic system that is dependent on fossil fuels. Every day I am confronted by all the ways my life and my choices contribute to climate change. Although I try to embody my faith commitments in how I live my life, I always do so imperfectly. It is the same for all of us.
The church is certainly not alone in pushing for energy alternatives. The world’s first comprehensive climate agreement, signed in Paris last month, should breathe new life into the green energy sector. Here in Canada, both the federal and Alberta governments have expressed support for this transition, as they know it will create many new job opportunities as the renewable energy industry grows and expands.
There are no simple answers when it comes to our warming climate. While I celebrate each small step our church takes that shows respect for creation, at the same time I grieve with those who feel alienated by our decisions. I find hope in knowing that even at difficult times and with difficult decisions, God is with us.
So whether you are celebrating the choice our church has made about fossil fuels, or fearful for the direction in which we are heading, may you know that you are not alone.

This message has been sent to all Conference offices and pastoral charges for which the General Council has an e-mail address. To ensure that all pastoral charges receive this message, we also ask presbytery secretaries to circulate to their e-mail distribution lists. Although this may result in some receiving the message more than once, we hope this will be less of a problem than if you were not to receive the message at all.

Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands. Serve God with gladness; come before his presence with singing. Psalm 100
We are blessed to have a talented and dedicated group of singers who present anthems from Thanksgiving through to Easter Sunday. Between Easter and Thanksgiving we are very fortunate indeed to have several individuals and groups who present wonderful musical gems.

Chalmers United is looking for ways to serve and attract young families and children. And so we are very excited to announce that the Official Board has voted in favour of hiring a Christian Education Co-ordinator. Stay tuned for announcements!
Oxford UCW Presbyterial was recently held in Kintore at Chalmers United Church. Special thanks to guest speaker Donald Hilborn for speaking to us on a very special project going on in Mozambique that he has some insights regarding. Donald was a member of Faith United Church, and before it closed, the congregation decided to donate a large sum of money to a farming project to help rural people in Mozambique Africa. Listen to more to get the full scoop on his incredible journey to Mozambique to see the people and the project first hand!
Groundskeepers - Lawn Boyz
Two years ago, my dad introduced me to a book called Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen. That book inspired me to create my own lawn buisness which I did in 2011. It started with one contract and one lawn mower. Since then I've had to hire my brothers to help with the additional contracts I've acquired, including the church. That's why we call the business Lawn Boyz. Lawn Boyz now has 5 clients and 4 lawn mowers.

As of Sept. 15, 2014 Rev. Doug Peck is on Parental Leave. Read his last E-Bulletin here.
Rev. Doug will return on Mar. 15, 2015.
This is a slightly longer E-Bulletin than usual, as it's the last E-Bulletin that I'll be sending for six months, as I'm soon to be away on Parental Leave, covering the second part of the first year of our daughter Naomi's first year of life. Being my last week of work before a six month Parental Leave, I'm going to miss all of you!, however, I'm really excited for this opportunity ahead of me! As a Dad, taking a 6 month leave is a relatively new opportunity. It's an opportunity that many Dads in our congregations did not have the opportunity to do! For that reason, it's one I don't take lightly. One of the many blessings of my job is to hear about parenthood through the wisdom of so many Moms, Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas, and so often I hear the same thing.... 'They grow up so fast!' To have the next six months to be present in all the little, cute and stinky moments, of my childrens' lives is sure to be a blessing I'll always remember and cherish. It's one that I'm able to do because of the blessing that has been offered by each and everyone of you! For that, I am truly grateful. The work that you have all put into making this possible is something of a grace in my life that I lift my gratitude to God for it!
Though I will miss being here in Kintore and Brooksdale for the day to day excitement, I have garnered an excitement that comes from knowing that I'll be coming back to two strengthened congregations. Already, I have seen a dynamic and team mentality that is nothing short of the Living Body of Christ at work in us. There has been a rising of leadership and ownership on behalf of so many that makes me want to high five each an everyone of you! I hope this Spirit never leaves us! When I'm gone, draw strength upon this new way of being church. Our communities need us now more than ever and you all know I don't need to say that. We must continue to answer this call and be the church they need us to be to bring life and bring it abundantly!
Again, I will miss you all but can't wait to hear about the awesome you are all about to bring to our ministries in the name of our God and Saviour!
God be with you all and please prayer for me as I enter into this new experience intimate parenting! I promise to prayer for you all as well!

On June 10, 1925 the Methodists, Congregationalists, and 70 per cent of the Presbyterian Church of Canada entered into a union. Joining as well was the small General Council of Union Churches, centred largely in Western Canada. It was the first union of churches in the world to cross historical denominational lines and hence received international acclaim. On June 14, 2015 we celebrated the 90th Anniversary of The United Church of Canada.Read more about the history of the United Church: http://www.united-church.ca/history/overview/brief

On Family Day 2013 a bunch of congregation members from a couple of small churches in Kintore, ON and Brooksdale, ON went to the local arena in Embro, ON, and the result was simply epic! A note from Reverend Doug Peck as he begins his parental leave September 14, 2014
Doug

A highlight was the "mystery musicians" who arrived just in time to perform the finale at our first ever outdoor Kintore Koffee House. The talented sister and brother violin duo Lauren and Ryan
Thomson of Kintore, were the icing on the cake!

We were blessed with fantastic weather, delicious breakfast, tasty baking, stimulating books and environmental resources, pretty flowers, amazing talent, stylish t-shirts and bargain shopping all in our beloved Kintore! Thanks for all involved in organizing and participating. It was a magical morning. See you next year.

The present church building, built in 1914, was the last of at least four buildings used for Christian worship in and around Kintore. Our modern-day Chalmers United Church was built as a Presbyterian church to replace the original white brick Presbyterian church that stood on the southeast corner of Lot 16 Con 11, one mile east of Kintore. Thirteen years after the present building was built, church union occurred, bringing together the Presbyterians and Methodists as Chalmers United Church. Some members of the Presbyterian congregation, approximately 40 families, did not join the union and they continued to worship in the Methodist church, which had been built in 1906 on the southeast corner in the village next to the old general store.
During Rev. MacDonald's tenure the Presbyterian church in Canada entered into Union with the Methodist church. A little over ten years after its construction, Kintore Presbyterian Church became Kintore Chalmers United Church.

A tummy warming pot of chili was available for supporters of AJBaker School before the 5th ARC Meeting on Thursday, Feb 20th at a "winter picnic".
There was a BIG step in right direction to save AJBaker from closure when a motion was made and passed by the ARC Committee to "formally reject Senior Administration's Recommendation to the North West Oxford Elementary ARC, and that all the schools in the ARC stay open" Congratulations and thank you to the ARC committee, Save AJ Baker Group and community supporters for getting to this stage.
It's not over yet, a report will be written recommending the school stays open. There will be a meeting for the public to comment on the report and then a presentation to the Board in the fall.. We still need your support!

Calling All Knitters (and Crocheters)
Click for Babies is an initiative organized by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome in partnership with health units and hospitals to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome. It is designed to raise awareness about the Period of PURPLE Crying, an infant abuse prevention program that educates parents about normal infant crying and that it is never okay to shake or harm an infant.
You can help by knitting PURPLE newborn baby caps to be distributed to babies through local hospitals in November.
Guidelines for Caps:
- create as many caps as you like using the purple "Baby Friendly" (no wool) yarn provided
- please do no use "pom poms" or any type of straps or strings
- use the patterns provided or visit www.clickforbabies.org for more patterns and information.
We have been invited once again by the Perth District Health Unit in Stratford, to knit purple hats for newborn baby boys to promote the Period Purple Campaign (there are already enough light purple hats for baby girls made).
There is purple yarn and patterns to knit or crochet from the Perth District Health Unit available at knitting group.
Hats need to be completed by the end of the month. Last year we knit around 50 hats. Thanks for your overwhelming response to this invitation.

Thank you to the UCW for the wonderful Christmas Dinner on Thursday. The turkey was scrumptious and the program meaningful and fun.
Did you know Kintore has its own Kintore Recorder Ensemble? Come at 6:45 pm to hear their first performance at our Christmas Eve Service 7pm.
Kintore Chalmers presents our first in a Series of Movie Nights, Sun. Dec. 15 at 6:30. Refreshments will be served. Rated PG, The Nativity Story chronicles the arduous journey of two people, Mary and Joseph, a miraculous pregnancy, and the history-defining birth of Jesus. Everyone is welcome. Bring your friends and neighbours.
We CAN make a difference...The momentum is building. Once again another incredible group of presenters from the Kintore community stated their cases to the ARC Committee, on Nov. 28 at Thamesford Public School.
Chalmers United supports keeping our local Thames Valley District school open. Those interested in saving A.J.Baker in Kintore are welcome to join meetings and help the campaign to keep the school open.

The Mennonite Supper on Friday, October 18th, 2013 was a big success.
Thank you to Florence Steele for making this happen. Thanks also to those who cleaned the basement, set the tables, served the meal, washed dishes, and those who came and enjoyed the delicious meal. And a big thank you to Anne Kelly and daughter Krista who prepared the meal and taught us a bit about the Mennonite culture.

"Heroes of Zorra" weekend held at our sister church, St.Andrews United in Brooksdale was a huge success. Basking in the perfect weather those attending this event learned about past and present day heroes and their lives, experienced re-enactments of battles, discovered some of our local history, met friends and neighbours, danced, sang, feasted, worshipped together on Sunday morning and saw the launch of this very special website. The new site recognizes the many individuals from the township of Zorra who have served our country from the 1860's to present day. This website will be a unique resource for us and future generations. Congratulations and thank you to all who expertly organized and tirelessly worked to see this project come to fruition.

Heroes of Zorra Service: Did you miss this church service at our sister congregation, St. Andrew's United Church in Brooksdale, this past August? This special service was held to honour our heroes in zorra and the website launch, www.heroesofzorra.ca. Enjoy this video now that it's online. Special thanks to the Chalmers Choir for leading the service in song!
